Businesses near the University of Huddersfield serve two markets on the same street: settled residents who ring, and students who will not ring under any circumstances. Winning the second one means published prices, online booking or ordering, and a site that's fast on a phone. Nothing else.

Two buying behaviours, one postcode
Marsh, Birkby and Edgerton sit between the town centre and the campus. Long-term residents behave like any local market. Term-time customers behave like online shoppers: compare, check reviews, book, arrive. They will skip a business that requires a phone call.
What to change
- Publish prices. A student budget filters ruthlessly and silently.
- Enable online booking or ordering, even a simple form. The phone is a barrier, not a service.
- State term-time and holiday hours separately, and keep them current.
- Make it fast. These decisions happen on mobile data, walking.
- Offer something specific — a student rate, a quiet-hours discount — and say so on the page.
The seasonality is predictable, so plan for it
September and January are surges; late June to early September is a trough. Businesses that only market during the surge lose money twice. Build the resident-facing side of the site properly and the quiet months hurt far less.
Landlords and agents especially
The student rental cycle runs months ahead of the general market in these areas. Agents and landlords who publish that calendar, and their fees, pick up instructions from the ones who don't.
