Website builder vs web designer: an honest comparison
A website builder is the right choice when you're testing an idea, have more time than money, and only need a simple presence. A web designer is worth it once the site has a job to do — bringing in enquiries, bookings or orders — because the cost of a site that quietly converts nobody is far higher than the build fee.

Where a builder genuinely wins
- Low up-front cost — typically a monthly subscription rather than a project fee.
- You can change text yourself at 11pm without asking anyone.
- Fine for a new venture that hasn't proven demand yet.
Where it starts to cost you
- Your time. Most owners lose evenings, and the site ends up 80% finished for a year.
- Sameness. A template that a hundred other local businesses use doesn't help anyone choose you.
- Speed. Builder pages tend to be heavy, and heavy pages lose mobile visitors on 4G.
- Conversion. Templates are designed to look tidy, not to walk a specific customer to an enquiry.
The three-year maths
A builder at roughly £20 a month is about £720 over three years, plus your own time. A designed site is a one-off fee plus a domain and hosting. The deciding number isn't either of those — it's how many enquiries each produces. One extra job a month usually settles the argument in most trades.
A simple way to decide
- Is the site meant to bring in work, or just exist? If just exist, use a builder.
- What is one customer worth to you? If it's hundreds or thousands, the build fee is small.
- Do you have the hours? Be honest about whether you'll actually finish it.
- Do you need to sell, take bookings or connect a system? That's designer territory.
Common questions
Can I start with a builder and move later?
Yes, and plenty of businesses do. Keep your own domain name so the move is straightforward and you don't lose the address customers already know.
Can I still edit a designed site myself?
Yes — we hand over access and show you how to make everyday changes.
