What Just Eat commission really costs a Huddersfield takeaway

Aggregators are worth paying for discovery — finding customers who've never heard of you. They are terrible value for regulars, who would have ordered from you anyway. A direct ordering page on your own site lets you keep the platforms for new customers and move repeat orders to a channel where you keep the full order value.

Split your orders into two piles

Pile one: people who found you on the app and had never heard of you. That commission is a customer-acquisition cost, and it's arguably fair. Pile two: your regulars, who search your name, tap the app out of habit, and order the same thing they've ordered for two years. You're paying acquisition rates on customers you already acquired.

How Huddersfield takeaways move pile two

  1. Build a simple ordering page on your own domain — menu, options, card payment, collection or delivery.
  2. Print the web address on every bag, receipt and menu leaflet that leaves the shop.
  3. Offer something small and permanent for direct orders — free drink, a fixed discount — that still leaves you far ahead of the commission.
  4. Point your Instagram, Facebook and Google Business Profile links at your own order page, not the aggregator.
  5. Keep the aggregators running. They're still the best discovery channel you have.

You also get the data

On an aggregator, the customer belongs to the platform. On your own site, you know what sells, at what hours, and to whom. That's what lets you plan staffing, cut a dish that doesn't move, and message customers directly when you launch something new.

What it costs to build

A menu-and-ordering site sits at the £950 fully-loaded level, because it needs payments, options, collection times and confirmation emails handled properly. For most shops that's recovered within the first few hundred direct orders.

Business automation and software

Ordering, payments and confirmations wired into how the kitchen actually runs.
